I love how you ended this post “ seeing the hotel not as an owner but a creator!” Just beautiful

Aw thank you! It’s been a long road as you know to get to understanding that!

It seems similar to raising a child and letting them go on their own path out in the world. Your hard work in the past touches multitudes in some way, on and on.

Absolutely right - like raising a child. And thank you as now I can see how impacted I was about our time there and how you wonder if you touch others as well and I felt that we did!

Your loving comments even made me tear up because I know how much heart and soul you and Mark put into making that hotel into the number one boutique hotel. It's good that you left with happy memories and feeling great pride about your five years there.

Thank you. You know more than many of our struggles at the time. I finally felt happy and proud that we did it.

Many times I've been back to a place in a completely different role.

Many times I've NOT returned because it became impossible through govt. changes.

Many times I've teared up over the changes and the tears were like yours, nostalgic? sad? happy? remembering? peaceful? All of the above. It IS NOT the same river. I'm not exactly the same person and it's all wonderfully chaotic, challenging and a part of a new community in the world.

Thanks for posting this.

Thanks Jill for your comment! Life is a journey and it is not ever the same river or we are not the same person. I’m glad you liked the quote!

Okay so I'm sure I cried as many times as you did just from reading this lol. I just know the feeling of returning to something you know intimately. It's happy, it’s sad, it's bittersweet, it's EVERYTHING all rolled into one big knot.

I'm SO glad you took this opportunity to go there and just BE. I've been waiting for this one 😊

Aw thanks Kristi! Yes, right, it’s happy, it’s sad, it’s strange to return to something known so intimately for sure! You are one of many who told me today that they also cried reading this. Just BEing was hard (at first) but so worth it to observe and relax. We loved it.

Beautiful Marlo, kind of sad, but so so great you happened onto the word Founder, b/c indeed, you and Mark are that. You founded something incredible (the former owner had to the desire or vision you both did, you guys ARE the founders). And that is a beautiful thing. Your legacy of perfection and beauty, comfort in nature, continues, in the hands of those that know how to handle YOUR VISION! Pura vida, girl.

Thanks Jeanine! It was strange indeed, and I finally did realize all that we did, created, founded there just now. That may sound strange also, but it’s true. And yes, the new owners have kept our vision of the beautiful place. Wondering-did you ever return to the bookstore or town after you left?

We sold store so long ago were able to see the next iterations, Marlo. Love the present one as they are bookstore owners from Canada, so know and love books as we do. Middle ground owners wanted a cash flow primarily and since we’d set things up quite well, they got it, but they were not bookaholics. The best thing is the store continues to thrive. We found a need (who knew) and filled it. I’d always told people we ‘opened a bookstore in MX,’ but when we met George Whitman, owner of Shakespeare &Company at his esteemed store and traded stories, he corrected me and said, ‘You founded a bookstore in Mexico.’ That simple word made all the difference. Love your story and your commitment to perfection. It’s a rare thing.

Oh thanks for filling that part in for me Jeanine! Isn't it nice to know what you founded is in good hands? I love that!

And meant to tell you, the ‘not stepping into same river’ phrase and your repetition of it was very powerful.

Ahh this is so lovely! I smiled the whole way through reading it. All your hard work, heart and passion paid off for sure! So glad you got to go back and relax there ❤️🙏☺️

What a beautiful quote! It's so true. Nothing is ever the way we left it, and neither are the people the same as they were the last time we saw them. It must've felt both luxurious and a little bit awkward to get to be pampered guests this time around. (NOP must've felt fantastic!) Everything looks and sounds so peaceful and spectacular, just as when you were leading the way. How wonderful that the new owners seem to care about it as much as you did; it's lovely to read that you saw their improvements in such a positive way. No more Gomer.

Thanks Joy! Yes, no more Gomer and luckily we and the new owners have a nice relationship! It was a bit awkward, I think I kept saying it felt strange, and nice! NOP was a relief. Then I could see clearly what I couldn’t before and I was filled with pride!

Marlo- like you, I teared up a bit just reading your account of your return. I’m so glad the new owners are as passionate about the resort as you and Mark were.

Aw thanks SaSa! I’m glad they are too!
