My name is Marlo. I’m from the northern suburbs of Chicago. Except for the 4 years when I was in college - and not venturing far at all - I had only lived in the Midwest.
I married my college sweetheart, Mark in 1992, and our first international trip was for our honeymoon to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
We spent years raising our family and taking family trips domestically and to other international locations. I love to travel, but again, had only lived in the suburban Chicago area.
In 2017, we decided to make a complete life change.
Upheaval, really!
We bought a small, boutique hotel in the jungle of Costa Rica and moved there!
Woah, that sure is an adventure!

What an Adventure was born from people wanting to know more about our journey. In this publication, my goal is to give you an insider’s look into this adventure.
You’ll find the story of why we embarked on this crazy adventure. What it was like to make such a big change and how it felt to move away from family and friends.
You’ll find stories about learning how to run a hotel in a foreign country.
You’ll read about unexpected challenges and why we needed to rebuild an entire hotel.
You’ll read some stories written by Mark that only he can describe.
You’ll hear about people we met and other interesting and crazy stories about hotel guests over the years.
And you’ll find tips about living in a foreign country and the things I miss since we returned to the U.S.
All of this and more!
I also expect to add some additional adventures - Sidebar Adventures - every now and again. Why? Because life is an adventure, and I like exploring!
